About Chess Academies
Sussex Junior Chess established the Chess Academy concept as a way of encouraging wider participation in chess.
The programme seeks to liaise with schools within a geographic area and then to tailor fun, innovative, and age and experience appropriate chess events to suit that community. It is hoped that this will bring chess to a new audience, encouraging them to learn to play chess and offering them a path for progression through local clubs to County and even National level events.
Bob Noyce, a coach with many years experience in junior chess is the Academy Director for the Haywards Heath area.

Saturday 24th March 2012
The 4th Haywards Heath Junior Chess Academy tournament was held at Lindfield Primary School on Saturday 24th March and attracted 43 junior players from 8 different schools, with ages ranging from 5 – 11 years old.
The tournament was played as an individual event. Any school that entered 3 or more players was also included for team placing, with the top three scores being counted. As can be seen by the final standings it was a very hard & close fought competition!
Certificates for everyone who took part were circulated on the day. The afternoon was a great success, with several people remarking on what a nice atmosphere there was and the high levels of good sportsmanship.
Many children were playing in their first ever tournament and special prizes were also presented for a combination of sportsmanship, exemplary behaviour and good effort.
I would like to thank everyone who came along, both adults and children who helped to make the afternoon enjoyable & such a success. Very special thanks go to Lindfield Primary School for hosting the event. Much gratitude goes to Colin Harding & Edward Manchester for their help in running the event. Finally sincere appreciation goes to John Higgs for all of the coordination, admin support & help that he has given to us all in his role as SJC Chess Academies Coordinator.

The afternoon was a great success, with several people remarking on what a nice atmosphere there was and the high levels of good sportsmanship.
Many children were playing in their first ever tournament and special prizes were also presented for a combination of sportsmanship, exemplary behaviour and good effort. Amongst the school clubs taking part were children who had been playing chess in some cases for less than a term, but fought hard to put in good performances and gain prizes.
I would like to thank everyone who came along, both adults and children who helped to make the afternoon enjoyable & such a success. Very special thanks go to Lindfield Primary School for hosting the event and much gratitude goes to Colin Harding & Edward Manchester for their help in running the event.
