U11 Inter-Schools Competitions - The Primary Cup

Finals Day - 14th June 2011

The final of the 2010-2011 U11 Inter-schools Tournament was kindly hosted by one of our Academy Schools - London Meed School in Burgess Hill.

An uphill struggle for black photo

An exciting finish to Round 1

In September the competition started with 36 teams from across East and West Sussex, with both State and Independent schools represented. To reach the final, teams had to play in an initial round against local schools in the Autumn term, followed by a divisional round in the Spring term.

So it's quite an achievement to reach Finals Day and all 12 teams should feel very proud of their achievement. Quite remarkable is the record of Ashurst Primary in this competition. Despite being one of the smallest schools with only 64 pupils in total, 32 of them play chess, and the School has reached the finals on numerous occasions over the last 15 years.

The standard of play was very high with 2 England players and several Sussex County squad players present, and all matches were played in very good spirit with team mates supporting and encouraging each other.

Final Positions:

Division 1 Division 2 Division 3
1st Broadwater CofE School 1st Copthorne Prep B 1st Langney Primary, Eastbourne
2nd Copthorne Prep A 2nd Ashdown House 2nd Wivelsfield Primary
3rd St. Lawrence, Hurstpierpoint 3rd London Meed A 3rd St. Margarets, Angmering
4th Forest Row CofE School 4th Ashurst CE School 4th London Meed B

There were also prizes (consumable!) for those children who had scored 100% in Rounds 1 and 2 in the Autumn and Spring terms:

Finlay Black (Barcombe)
Freddie Coleman (St Lawrence)
George Connelly (Ashurst)
Niroshan Ganeshan (Milton Mount)
Cassie Graham (Broadwater A)
Rhys Harmour (The Meads)
Alexander Keen (Ashdown House)
George Neale (Broadwater B)
Sam Lennard (Broadwater A)
Freddie Smith (Ashdown House)

Round 1 - Semi Finals

Team captains drew lots (or pawns in this case!) to decide the pairings and colours:

Division 1 Division 2 Division 3
St. Lawrence Broadwater Ashdown House ½ London Meed A Wivelsfield 3 1 St Margarets
Copthorne A 4 0 Forest Row Copthorne B 4 0 Ashurst London Meed B ½ Langney
Primary Cup Final 2011 Primary Cup Final 2011 Primary Cup Final 2011

Round 2 - Grand Final

The winning teams from the semi-final in each division then played for 1st and 2nd place; while the losing teams played for 3rd and 4th place:

Division 1 Division 2 Division 3
Copthorne A 2 2 Broadwater Copthorne B 3 1 Ashdown House Wivelsfield 1 3 Langney
Forest Row 0 4 St Lawrence London Meed A 3 1 Ashurst London Meed B 1 3 St Margarets

Where there were draws, the tie-break rules came into operation with the result being decided on board count and then bottom board elimination.

It just remains to thank London Meed School for hosting the event, and the teachers and parents for transporting and encouraging the teams. In particular we commend the effort to attend made by Ashdown House who were on half-term. Last but not least, we thank Lesley Simpson for all her hard work co-ordinating the Schools Cups this year and we look forward to another exciting competition starting in September.

First Round - to be completed by the end of the Autumn Term 2010:

The snow in November caused a few problems in some groups - deadline for completion for Groups B, D and G extended into January 2011. The draw for Round 2 is therefore delayed until completion of all groups.
