Sussex Junior Chess - Deutsch Grand Prix - 2010/2011 Season

There are 6 tournaments that make up an annual Sussex Junior Chess Grand Prix (GP), similar to the one in motor racing. Results in each of the constituent Grand Prix tournaments earn points towards the overall Grand Prix. These points are accumulated for all eligible participants.

The 6 grand prix tournaments for 2010-2011 are:

GP1 - Crowborough, 18th September 2010 GP2 - Worth, 23rd October 2010 GP3 - Horsham, 21st November 2010 GP4 - Hastings, 2nd January 2011 GP5 - Eastbourne, 12th February 2011 GP6 - Worthing, 21st May 2011

At the last one of the season, which this year will be the Worthing Grand Prix on May 21st, age group prizes are awarded for performance over the season. The best four individual grand prix scores for each player are totalled. Players needs to have attended a minimum of three Grand Prix events to be eligible.

Additionally, special loyalty medals are awarded to all players who have attended at least 5 of the Grand Prix events.

Final Round-Up:

A very competitive season ended on 21st May with the Worthing Grand Prix. Several sections were very closely contested which made for an exciting tournament.

In the U8s, only half a point separated the top 3 with Sophia Martin just squeezing out Scott Borland for the top spot on tie-break. In the U9s, the tie was for second place and was so close that the tie-break rules failed to separate Matthew Forster and Hannah Sutton.

The U10s was very tense with at least 6 players in contention for the prizes. Indy Udsholt-Clayton's impressive 6 out of 6 in the U11 Minor secured him the top spot with Cassie Graham half point adrift. But the real excitement was for third place with a three-way tie. Regulars of this season will be aware that Freya Finnegan has gained a reputation for just losing out on tie-break, so nice to see her prevail here and take third place. Commiserations though to Chris Hill and Jamie Lear.

Again, the tie in the U11s was for third place with Niroshan Ganeshan just edging out Seb Pollard. Interesting to note that 2nd and 3rd place were both from Milton Mount School, with The Meads School also making a very strong showing with Seb, Jimmy, Rhys and Alistair separated by only 3 points all finishing in the top ten.

The U12 section was another very exciting one with four strong contenders for the prizes. Matthew Howell just missed out on 3rd place by half a point but did have the compensation of 2nd place in the U18 Minor on the day. Similarly, Eleanor Ferguson just missed out on 3rd place in the U15s by half a point.

Finally, this season has been notable for the number of girls who have played, and it is very refreshing to see that a quarter of the prizes (7 out of 28) went to girls.

Grand Prix Medals

In addition to the above, special grand prix medals are awarded for committment to those who have played in at least 5 out of the 6 grand prix events. Congratulations to :-
