Sussex Closed Girl's U11, U14, U18 Championships, Ashdown House School, 10th October 2010

The girl's championships took place slightly earlier in the season than usual, but nonetheless 34 girls challenged to be the Sussex U11, U14 and U18 champions. It was a busy day as the training day running alongside attracted a further 50 boys.

Luckily the day was warm and sunny allowing the children to make use of the beautiful grounds.

Thanks to Ashdown House school for the venue and pupils Charlie Keen (Captain of Chess) and Freddie Smith for their help setting up. As always, a lot of people contributed to making the day a success. Thanks to Ed Gooda, Derek Ferguson and Debbie Forster on catering; Sue Howell (tournament controller) assisted by Will Graham; and arbiters Brian Stockham and Trevor Norton.

Special mention should go to Grace Norman and Milly Haward, both from St Lawrence School. Grace, aged 8, found herself persuaded to move from the training day into the tournament (her first ever) so that her school could enter a team and rose to the challenge admirably, contributing 3 points to their total of 9. Petite Milly found the height of the tables a challenge but happily experimented with a variety of suggestions, eventually settling on the unorthodox arrangement of always being at the bottom end of one of the sloping desks!
