Eastbourne Grand Prix, 12th February 2011By this stage in the season competition for places in the County teams is fierce and there is all to play for in the season-long grand prix. This led to a sensational turn-out of 88 players - the youngest aged 4 and the eldest 17.
Dave receives some advice on his openings..... Thanks to Sue Howell and Will Graham who kept the tournament running smoothly despite a very fluid population of players; coping with withdrawals, late arrivals and last minute transfers between sections. Our very experienced arbiting team - Brian, Mike, Trevor, and Dave - were kept busy all day as several matches in the Under-18 section used the full time limit in every round. It was good to see several Schools very well represented - in particular Bishop Bell, London Meed, Buckswood School, The Meads, Copthorne Prep, Broadwater and Holy Cross. Broadwater had a very good day, with 6 players in the prizes. Mention should go to Freddie, Daniel, Jimmy and Rhys who found themselves elevated to their first Major tournament - always a tough place to be - but all showed determination and perseverence. Finally, thanks to the catering team - Ed, Derek and Debbie - who coped admirably with the demand; and last but not least, the prize for the muddiest competitor at the end of the day goes to Oscar Udsholt-Clayton!
