U18 Report:

Firstly big thanks for everybody turning up on time once we all managed to find a parking space, somewhere in the wilds of Eton.

The event started a few minutes late, awaiting arrival of the Manchester Team. The quality of players on the Top Boards was very strong from all Counties.

As the results came in for Rd 1, we could see we were in contention to be up with the leading counties; it all came down to the last game which had started late, Bd 2 David who won his game and it transpired we were leading the field - but by only half a point.

As David arrived back, the other players were ready for Rd 2, once again a solid and even better performance, produced a fantastic result 10.5/12.

For winning we received a wooden chess board, a trophy to be engraved and all players received a trophy to keep, then it was the usual round of photos.

I would like to make a special thanks to George and David who have supported these Team Events over many years and it was fitting to win on their last occasion representing Sussex Junior Chess.

Well done to the following players who won both games on the day: George Salimbeni (Bd1), Jude Lenier (Bd3), Jonny Burch (Bd7), Freddie Keen (Bd8), Morgan Blake (Bd10) and William Graham (Bd12)  Also to the players who were unbeaten on the day; David Grant, Matthew Payne,  and Ramsay Pyper.

For the first time at this event there was a School Team event and it was with much amazement that Matthew, Will and Arthur (St Andrews Boys High School, Worthing) realised they had come joint second (with Challoners) with 4.5 points behind winners St Olaves Grammar who scored a perfect 6 points.

Thanks go to Keith Tunstall, and his Team for organising the event in such a nice venue, also BJCA for the refreshments, and Neville ECF Arbiter for running a well organised event, and lastly our players and supporting parents.

Andy Payne (U18 Team Manager)

The organiser's published a report on the ECF Website which featured George's game - read it here.

U13 Report:

A trip to Eton College on the hottest day of the year for 2 under 13 teams from Sussex.

There were 7 teams of 6 boards competing in the U13s which was run as a jamboree with 30 minutes on the clock for each player for each of four games.

We came away with 3.5 points out of 6 for both teams after the first round, placing both 2nd equal but a full point behind Kent. Kent extended their lead after the second round when they secured another 4.5 points to reach 9 with our ‘A’ team achieving 3.5 and 2 for the Bs. The As remained in 2nd equal spot with Berkshire – 2 points behind Kent. The third round saw a further 3 points for the As and 1.5 for the Bs. The As were still 2 points behind Kent but were now joined in 2= position by Surrey & Berkshire.

With only prizes for 1st and 2nd spots, it was going to be tough to catch Kent but Surrey had the momentum with them and they got 4.5 points in the last round to join Kent on 14.5/24 – however Kent took it on tie-break. Both Sussex teams scored a solid 2.5 points to leave Sussex A on 12.5 and 4th equal and Sussex B on 9.5 being 6th.

Individual mentions must go to the 3 players who were undefeated all day and finished on 3.5/4 – Robert Fitzgerald (board 1), David Lui (5) and Joshua Higgs (6).

Thank you to all the players and the travelling parents. I hope that you all enjoyed the day. Most of the relatively young team will still be eligible for the event next year and in the meantime, there will be a NYCA Under 14 (12 player) team trip to Telford on 24.09.11.

Finally congratulations to the Under 18 team for winning their competition in the room next door. It was great to share the teams rooms with them.

Sue Howell (U13 Team Manager)
