Crowborough Grand Prix, 18th September 2010The first tournament of the season saw a bumper entry of 70 children from Sussex and beyond - it was great to be able to welcome visitors from Kent, Surrey and London who strengthened the competition. The standard of play in all sections was very high, and competition will be stiff for places in our county squads.
The SJC Catering Team - no gender stereotyping here! Catering ran smoothly under the stewardship of Ed Gooda and Derek Ferguson; thanks also to pairers Chris Lear & Will Graham, and arbiters Brian Stockham, Dave Graham, Trevor Norton and Mike Forster. We are also very grateful to Don Grant and Graham Salmon of Crowborough Chess Club for their help setting up, clearing away and collating results charts. Finally, to David Fryer who ran an analysis room. This was very well attended, although at one point I did notice that the adults analysing a position outnumbered the children by five to one. As always there are those players who put in excellent performances but are just squeezed out of the prizes on progressives - Jimmy Warwick in the U11 minor, Michael Stockham and Jamie Lear in the U11 major, and Alisha Gunn for the girls prize.
