Lindfield Primary School, Tuesday 14th July 2011
The second Haywards Heath Junior Chess Academy tournament held at Lindfield Primary School on Tuesday 14/7/11 attracted 38 junior players from 4 different schools. With Ages ranging from 5 – 11 years old.
The tournament was played as an individual event. But any school that entered 3 or more players was also included for team placing. (With the top three scores being counted.) As can be seen by the final standings below it was a very hard & close fought competition!
Certificates for everyone who took part were circulated on the day.
The afternoon was a great success, with several people remarking on what a nice atmosphere there was & the high levels of good sportsmanship.
Many children were playing in their first ever tournament & special prizes were also presented for a combination of Sportsmanship, Exemplary behaviour & good effort. Amongst the school clubs taking part, were children who had been playing Chess in some cases for less than a term, but fought hard to put in good performances & gain prizes!
Also playing in the tournament were several players from County level.
As can be seen by the results below spoils were shared between the experienced players & the newcomers!
I would like to thank everyone who came along, both Adults & children who helped to make the afternoon enjoyable & such a success. Very special thanks go to Lindfield Primary School for hosting the event & their PTA for generously donating the refreshments. Much gratitude goes to Sandra & Edward Manchester for their help in running the event. Finally sincere appreciation goes to John Higgs for all of the coordination, admin support & help that he has given to us all in his role as SJC Chess Academies Coordinator.

About Chess Academies
Sussex Junior Chess established the Chess Academy concept as a way of encouraging wider participation in chess.
The programme seeks to liaise with schools within a geographic area and then to tailor fun, innovative, and age and experience appropriate chess events to suit that community. It is hoped that this will bring chess to a new audience, encouraging them to learn to play chess and offering them a path for progression through local clubs to County and even National level events.
