NYCA U14 Championship, Telford, 26th September 2009
The U14 NYCA competition was in Telford this year so was a long trek involving either an overnight stay or a very early start.
We all arrived in good time, and knew that if Sussex played to the form book we would do well. That is easy to say but harder to do. We got off to a good start finishing the first round on 9.5 points out of 12, with Kent and Berkshire both on 8, and Lancashire on 7.5. We were keen to keep the momentum going in the second round and that's what the team did with an impressive 11 points.
At the end of the second round we had 20.5 points; 3.5 points ahead of Kent on 17, and 5.5 ahead of Berkshire with Lancashire falling away on 13.5. We had a little concern that we might start to fall away as the day went on but again the team kept the momentum going with scores of 11.5 and 10.5 in rounds 3 and 4 respectively, taking the national team championship with an impressive total of 42.5 out of 48.
Kent finished second on 35 and Berkshire third on 32. It was evident that the boys and girls kept their standard up and endeavoured to play good chess throughout the whole day. It was a comfortable margin but I saw quite a few hard battles during the rounds.
Congratulations to the team for an outstanding performance. Well done to Jude Lenier, Amy Hoare, Ram Mohan, Sam Aggarwal, Otto Pyper and Toby Harris for maximum points. Thanks must also go to the parental taxi service that provided transport and general butler services.
