This year’s event hosted by Surrey, was a lot nearer than Derbyshire, the venue for the last two years!
After losing one of our players on the day of the event to illness we had to make a quick re-arrangement of the Teams. Special thanks to Hannah Watkinson who volunteered to move to the U18’s Minor Section where she was rewarded by being part of the winning team! Also to Savya Aggarwal (U11) for stepping into the U13 Minor Section.
After the usual announcements relevant to Chess and a certain football match being played at the same time, the first of the 2 Rounds for U18’s (standard play) and 4 Rounds for the U13’s (rapid play) got under way, also playing our 2 reserves in their own little competition.
All through the competition in the U13’s it was clear other Counties had brought along their strongest players from U11’s and U9’s. We did not do this - David and I felt there is plenty enough competition during the year for those age groups. Our players were finding it very tough but they battled on and we hope they were not too disheartened.
As the results came through it was clear we were going to win the U18’s Minor event to become 2010 ECF U18 Minor Champions “well done to the whole team”.
Well Done to the following players who achieved 100% record on the day:
U18 Open - Shyam Mohan & Sean Lintott White
U18 Minor - Freddie Keen, Iona Rose & Steven Kennedy.
Also to the players who were unbeaten on the day:
U18 Open - David Grant, Matthew Payne, Chris Yates, Ram Mohan, & Daniel Sutton
U13 Minor - Savya Aggarwal
Thanks go to organiser Neill Cooper, Sue Maguire, Laurence Jones, Nigel Dennis and ECF Arbiter Chris Howell for running a well organised event, and as always to our players and parents for their support.
