Worthing ("Downs") Grand Prix - 16th May 2009, Thomas A Becket Middle School

As the last Grand Prix tournament of the season, many trophies and awards were at stake, and the event attracted a very strong entry of over 60 competitors, including three England players! It was really encouraging to see several new faces competing for the first time, and the future looks bright with several promising new players competing in the youngest age groups.

Thanks to the catering team - Paula Payne, Mandy North, Juliet Tomlin and Derek Ferguson; to Matthew Keen for managing the pairings single-handed; and to Brian Stockham, Chris Howell and Dave Graham for arbiting.

Prizes for the 2008-2009 Deutsch Grand Prix were awarded at this tournament, and full results can be found HERE.

Puzzle Position:

Arbiter and coach Dave Graham comments; "One of the joys of watching the children play at the tournament is the extraordinary positions they conjure up. I managed to capture the position below between one of our talented under 8 girls and the amazing Ollie Howell who is playing and winning games in tournaments even though he has only just turned 6. Phoebe is white to move and has 4 ways to deliver checkmate – can you spot them all?"
