Inter-Schools Competitions - Butler Cup

Each year Sussex Junior Chess organise an inter-school chess tournament for 4 age groups. The under-14 age group compete for the Butler Cup.

The tournament would not be possible without the support and goodwill of teachers, parents and other volunteers in transporting, arranging dates and encouraging the children – so a huge thanks must go to all involved.

Finals Day, May 2009

For the first time a finals’ day for the U14 Inter-Schools' Butler Cup was arranged and played on Tuesday 12th May at Great Walstead School. Twelve teams, 4 players in each team, who had previously been split into North and South Divisions and had all played in a divisional tournament (see results, below), met for 2 further games to decide on the final 2009 Winner.

The initial teams were

South North
Windlesham Copthorne
Rydon A Great Walstead
St. Andrews A Ashdown House
St. Andrews B Cottesmore
Hazelwick A Brambletye
Rydon B Hazelwick B

Unfortunately Cottesmore were unable to attend so Great Walstead provided a guest team for the final.

Round 1 was the Semi Final to determine the pairings for round 2 - which would ultimately result in the final.

The overall winners were Windlesham, with Copthorne and Rydon A in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Well done to them all, along with the other teams who all had a great afternoon of chess.
