'Sussex Smart Controls' compete in 4NCL Division 3The Four Nations
Chess League (4NCL) is a team tournament over three divisions, with
over 850 players
taking
part and almost £10,000 in cash prizes on offer. Their website claims "it
is the most prestigious team chess event held in the United Kingdom"! The 2008 - 2009 season is now over, and Sussex Smart Controls finished very respectably 15th out of 32 teams. Summary:
Weekend 5: 2nd/4th May, Daventry The Saturday game against the Poisoned Pawns 2 was lost 1.5 - 4.5. The
Sunday game against AMCA Rhinos was narrowly lost by 2.5 - 3.5. The Monday
game against Metropolitan was a good win 3.5 - 2.5 and a very good way
to end the season on a winning result. Thank you to all the players in the team for their support this season,
and also to David Fryer and Smart
Home Controls for sponsoring the team
and including all the team meals. Weekend 4: 21st/22nd March, Hinckley Island Our Saturday game against Cambridge University 2 team was hard fought
and we narrowly lost 2.5 - 3.5 with several of the games not quite going
our way at the end. The team: George Salimbeni - David Fryer - Grant Bucher - Andrew Tucker
- Matthew Payne - Tim Woods Weekend 3: 7th/8th February, De Vere Staverton Park, Daventry, Northants Saturday saw us repaired against a very strong White Rose team as bad weather conditions caused several teams to withdraw, and sadly we lost 1.5 - 4.5 Sunday, we faired much better with a fine win against Oxford 2. We won the match 3.5 - 2.5 and had several very good wins on the lower boards. The team: Dave Graham - Robert Elliston - George Salimbeni - Matthew Payne - Tim Woods - Chris Yates. Thanks to the players and their supporters for the weekend and for
the continued support for the Sussex Smart Controls Team. Weekend 2: 7th/8th December, Barcelo Hotel, Hinckley Island An excellent weekend for the players this weekend with a win on Saturday of 4.5 - 1.5 to Guildford AD&C 5 and a very good draw on Sunday to the Littlethorpe who were one of the top teams.
