Primary
Cup
Each
year Sussex Junior Chess organise an inter-school chess tournament
for 4 age groups. The largest group involves students
under the age of 11, followed by groups for the U13, U15 and U19. This
tournament has always proved very successful and this year was no exception
with more schools than ever entering the event.
None of these
tournaments would be possible without the support and willingness of
teachers, parents and other volunteers in
transporting, arranging dates and encouraging the children – so
a huge thanks must also go to all involved. Here’s to the 2008/09
season!

U11
Winners
U11 Section:
For the U11 section, schools are invited to join and then
play a number of local schools during the Autumn term. In the Spring
term the schools
were divided into groups determined by playing strength and again played
matches between themselves. The four strongest teams from each of the
3 divisions are then selected to play at the Finals.
This year's final took place at London Meed School in Burgess Hill. The
Schools involved came from across Sussex including Worthing, East Grinstead,
Haywards Heath, Brighton, Bexhill, Ashurst, and Eastbourne .
In Division 1, Broadwater School played Fonthill Lodge, and Birchwood
played Great Walsted in the semi-finals resulting in Broadwater and Great
Walsted qualifying for the Final. Two further hard fought matches then
took place with Great Walstead pipping Broadwater to the post to take
the title, and Fonthill Lodge (the only all girls team) taking the 3rd
place trophy against Birchwood.
In Division 2, Lancing Prep beat Little Common A in the final, leaving
The Meeds from East Grinstead to take 3rd place against Great Walstead
B.
Meanwhile in Division 3, Ashurst and London Meed took 1st
and 2nd respectively, followed by Ockylnge and Little Common B.
Many thanks to our host London Meed School in Burgess Hill.
