U12

The 12 players of the Sussex U12 team romped home to victory.

We were a very strong county this year with a big proportion of the team being either National Squad members or players close to this standard. We were keen to win this title having narrowly missed out in an U11 National event earlier in the year.

Given the cramped conditions in the rest area, all the players held their focus and performed in a very professional manner. Berkshire and Kent were thought to be our main rivals, but our strength in depth was the key to our success.

We won by a very impressive margin, over 10 points clear of the nearest team. Round scores of 10, 10, 10.5 and 10 (12 possible points per round) demonstrate the consistency and strength of the team. Given we only needed 3 points from the last round to secure victory, it was good to see the players maintain their concentration with another fantastic 10 points.

Well done to the players and congratulations should also go to the Sussex coaches and organisers, who have helped develop such a strong junior county!

The team was Jude Lenier 2, Christopher Yates 4, Ramsay Pyper 3, Ram Mohan 2.5, Shyam Mohan 4, Robert Fitzgerald 4, Felix Haxby 4, Amy Hoare 2, Freddie Keen 4, Daniel Sutton 3, Otto Pyper 4, Iona Rose 4.

The u16 team made the familar trek to Birmingham for a NYCA event and this year using a different venue . Edgebaston High School for Girls it was and though playing conditions were good there were no team rooms available. We were all including the u12 teams in one large hall. It is difficult to complain to the organisers as obviously cost is a large factor but... it was rather cramped in the team area.

Back to the event and we scored 5.5 points in the first 2 rounds and then had a bit of a dip in round 3 with just 3.5 points. Going into the final round we were on the same points as Kent in joint 3rd place. The last round we acheived 4.5 points and just narrowly missed out in the top 3 places by half a point

We finished in 4th place though no disgrace at all as we were missing 3 of our top players and one of which was only the night before. Well done to all of the team and you were all a pleasure to be with. Also to Thomas as he was unbeaten on the day and to Jonny for stepping in at the last minute.

The team was David Grant 0.5: George Salimbeni 2.5 ; Ben Silverstein 3; Mathew Payne 3; Adam Squibbs 3; Thomas Fitzgerald 3; Polly Lambert 2; Jonny Burch 2;
