2nd Weald Congress: 14th - 15th July 2007, Copthorne Prep School

Over 80 players turned out for the 2nd Weald Congress, which followed the success of the inaugural event last year. We were again blessed with sunshine which meant the barbecue could be rolled out at this fantastic venue.

Matches took place in 4 competitions, with 5 longplay rounds across the two days, and competition was fierce as ever. The tournament also decided the Sussex U18 and U14 players as well as the top Sussex Girl.

In the Open tournament, the play was dominated by some strong juniors from the start. The title was taken by Sussex Junior, George Salimbeni (128) on 4.5 out of 5, who also took the Sussex U18 title. Three players drew for 2nd place on 4 points: Alex Galliano (128), who also took the Sussex U14 title, David Graham (190) and William Jones (123). Joe Fraser and George O'Toole shared the u170 prize.

In the Majors, David Norton (114) took the title on 4.5 points ahead of Daniel Hunt (124) and Chris Heath (130) in joint 2nd. Chris Heath kindly donated his winnings to Sussex Junior Chess.

In the Intermediate tournament, the title was taken by Adrian Waldock (126) on 4.5 points. 2nd was shared by Lawrence Jones (112) and Ben Silverstein (82).

In the Minors, the title went to Phil Foley (82) on 4.5, with Nkosilathi Nkomo (87) taking 2nd place. There was a four way tie for third place between Charles Davies (89), Susan Chadwick (74), Arthor Meaton (71) and Barry Miles (90).

Thanks to all of the helpers who made the event so enjoyable.
