Horsham Grand Prix: 18th November 2006, Horsham

This year, the Horsham Grand Prix was the qualifier for the London Junior Chess Championships. Hence, pupils competed in U8, U10, U12 and U18 competitions.

In the U8s, six competitors took part in an all play all competition. Otto Pyper pipped Tom Haxby to first place on progressives, with both having scored 5 points. Third place was taken by Cosima Keen, and all three gained qualification to the London U8 tournament.

The U10 was a toughly fought competition with 3 British Champions among the winners. The tournament was won by Radha Jain from Hertfordshire on a perfect 6 points. Shyam Mohan took second on 5 points, with his brother Ram just shading out Robert Fitzgerald on progressives to take third. All 4 boys qualified for the U10 Major and London. U10 Minor qualifications were gained by Felix Haxby, Daniel Sutton and Sol Knipe.

In the U12 Tournament, the play was dominated by two visiting players, Adam Taylor and Duke Quinton who beat all of their opponents and drew with each other to share first place. Both qualified for the U12 Major at London. Third place was taken by Steven Jackson who beat both Freddie Keen and Sean Lintott-White on progressives. All three gained qualification to the U12 Minor tournament.

In the U18s, Adam Squibbs took the title, beating Rhys Cumming on progressives, with third place going to Zi Xuan Gu.
