British Championships: August 2007, Great YarmouthAugust brought the usual migration of Sussex players to the British Championships, which are being held in Great Yarmouth this year. In the junior competitions, the first week saw conclusion of the U8, U9, U11 and U13 competitions. In the U8s, the title was taken by Anna Wang of Oxford. However, Otto Pyper was joint second on 4.5 out of 6, giving him a share of the title of British Boys Champion. Rohan Shiatis finished on 3.5. In the U9s,

of 7. Otto Pyper scored 4.5 and Rohan Shiatis scored 3.5. In the U11s, Rhys Cumming faced an anxious last round, knowing that his fate rested not only on him winning his final game against 2nd seed Yinglun Teng, but also on the result on the top board. However a win for Rhys and a draw for Akash Jain from Hertfordshire on board 1 meant that they both share the British U13 title. The adult competitions continue for another week. In the British Championship, after 6 rounds, David Howell is on 4.5 and Tom Rendle on 3.5. After 6 rounds in the Major Open, George Salimbeni and Jude Lenier are both on 3.5, with Andrew Tucker and Joe Fraser on 2.5. In the second week of the championships, Sussex added a third British Champion, when Robert Fitzgerald took equal first place in the U10s with Adam Taylor of Surrey. Daniel Sutton Amy Hoare finished on 3/7 and Daniel Sutton on 2. In the U12s, Matthew Payne finished on 3.5 from 7. After a last minute decision to enter the U14, Tom Fitzgerald also scored 3.5 out of 7. In the Major Open, George Salimbeni continued his impressive performance to finish in equal 7th place on 7 out of 11. Andrew Tucker was equal 22nd on 6 and Joe Fraser equal 32nd on 5.5. Jude Lenier scored 4.5. In the British Championship, David Howell finished in equal 4th place on 7.5 out of 11, taking the U18 British Champion Title. Tom Rendle finished equal 20th on 6 points.
