| English U11 Championships: 16th - 17th October 2004, Nottingham Four Sussex players, Ben Blundell, Rhys Cumming, Joe Quinn and Oskar Schortz, as well as (honorary Sussex player) Andrew Turner all took part in this championship, which is the first of this year's England Trial Qualifiers. The participants played 5 rounds over the two days, each trying to achieve a minimum of 3 points to gain a half norm - partial qualification for the trials. At the end of the first day, Ben finished on 2.5. Rhys finished on 2 having lost to first seed Craig Whitfield, as did Joe and Oskar, who had met Andrew Turner in the last round of the day!. Oskar also won the best game prize for day 1 for his match against Andrew. On day 2, all five players won their first game, giving all 4 Sussex players their half qualification, but leaving Andrew to tough it out in the final round. Ben was drawn on board 2 against Ben Wetherfield with a chance of finishing the tournament in the top three. Unfortunately, Ben, Rhys and Joe lost their last round, but Andrew held out for a win to join them on partial qualification for the trials, and Oskar won his last round, finishing on 4 out of 5 in joint third place. |
