Downs Grand Prix: 17th May 2003, WorthingFinal Grand Prix Placings80 players ranging from age 6 to age 17 turned up to St Andrews High School, Worthing for the 7th Worthing/Downs Junior Chess Open. They played in 4 separate tournaments, each across 6 rounds. Players were drawn from Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire and Kent, as well as from right across Sussex. The Under 18 Major event resulted in a tie between Adam Prescott (U14 from Uckfield) and Joe Fraser (U13 from East Grinstead). Both scored 5 ½ points (their draw being against each other). Incredibly there was a 3 way tie for 3rd place as well, with Peter Willams (aged only 7, from Alton, Hampshire), Joe Richardson (U13, Westfield) and Danny Eichner (U17, Ashurstwood), all scoring 4 points. The Under 18 Minor event was won by Sarah Linnett (U12) from Lower Horsebridge with 5 points, with Alex Masters (U12), Crawley, and Thomas Blakeney (U12) from Hove, second and third. The Under 11 Major was extremely hard fought, with Farris Ziyada (U10 from Crawley) winning with 5 ½ points, from George Salimbeni (U10 from Staplefield). This was George’s best ever result. Anthony Gregory (U10 from Kent) was third. The Under 11 Minor saw best ever performances from Andrew Barnard (U11, East Grinstead), 5 ½ points, Will Thompson (U9), also from East Grinstead, and Kit Tregear (U9) from Hurstpierpoint.
