SCCU Inter-County Girls Team Event: 6th April 2003The Southern Counties Chess Union competition for girls was held on Sunday 6 April 2003 at the Northwick Park, Harrow, campus of the University of Westminster. A large number of our regular team members were unavailable due to holidays etc so we entered a young and very enthusiastic team in the U'11 team tournament. Only two of our team will be unavailable in this age group next year so the experience will stand us in good stead. Despite the odd disaster each win was welcomed by a cheer from the rest of the team and parents as each player put everything into their games. Juliette Parkinson won her very first competitive game in round 1 and Sarah had a great win on board 1 but the greatest celebration was for Connie Bloomfield in round 2 who was the last to finish and came into a very disconsolate team room as the round score was currently standing at 0/7 and calmly announced her win. The bravery award though must go to Rezwana's father who courageously volunteered to stand in for a missing player in the U'18 section and found himself playing England representative Chantal Sirisena. On asked how did the game go the reply was 'well I lasted 28 moves!'. In the U'18s we entered a shared team with Essex and very nearly won the tournament coming second just ½ a point behind the winners Surrey (Wey Valley). Abi came away with the best board 2 prize ahead of regular rival Antonia Round from Middlesex.
