Eastbourne Grand Prix: 22nd February 2003

The Under 18 Major section was won for the second year in a row by Nimai McCarthy from Bexhill-on-Sea. Nimai is under 18 so this is his last year of SJC events. Joe Fraser (U13 - East Grinstead) and Andrew Tucker (U12 - Ditchling) were second and third - a full 2 points behind.

Due to the small number of players entered for the under 18 minor competition, the group was skillfully merged with the under 18 major section by the organiser, allowing only the players who did well from the minor section to play their seniors!

The U11 Major was extremely competitive, and of a high standard. Andrew Winchcombe (U11 -Fifield, Berkshire), who has been getting closer to an overall win in every tournament this year finally took the spoils. Second place was Farris Ziyada (U10 from Crawley), and third was Tristan Blundell (U11-Hurstpierpoint). All three of these have previously qualified for the England trials in April, where a good performance will be rewarded with an invitation to play for your Country.

The Under 11 Minor competition, for the less experienced players was won by David Sands (U10 -Hailsham) with a perfect 6 points. Second was Charles Board (U10 -Chelwood Gate) and third Thomas Oakley (U10 - Crawley).

The extra prizes were won by Edward Reeves-Dienes (East Grinstead - U7), Kipp McAdam Freud (Worthing - U8), James Foster (Thame - Oxfordshire - U9) and Oliver Brothwood (Uckfield - U10).

There were three children whose birthday fell on 22nd February, and who chose to play chess instead of doing anything else. In recognition of this SJC gave them a small present each. They were Sarah Margolis (Seaford), Sheila Dines (Sanderstead - Surrey) and Patrick Reeves-Dienes (East Grinstead).
