UK Chess Challenge 2002Sussex Girls do well at the Land UK Chess Challenge National Giga Final in Sheffield 20th and 21st July 2002Katherine Rattle led the way to the Terra Final with a perfect 6/6 score in the Girls U13 section with Stephanie Barraclough winning the Girls U12 with 5½/6 and Ellie Hayden unlucky to lose her play-off against Selina Khoo after finishing 1st equal with 5½/6 in the U11 section. Ellie nevertheless qualifies for the Challengers. As well as the winners all the participants deserve congratulations after qualifying for Sheffield from an initial entry of 55,000 players. Each of the 2,000 players at Sheffield had already qualified from their school or club and then succeeded at their County Mega Finals. Sussex Megafinal - 4 May 2002Each year this tournament gets bigger, and this year was no exception with 173 participants. Juniors from the two chess clubs in the north of the county took most of the honours, with East Grinstead just pipping Crowborough by 6 first places to 5.
