SCCU U14/U90 grade Competition

1 June 2002 - The Final

Even though there was a small matter of the world cup as competition, nearly all Sussex's first choice team made it to the Under 14's (u90 grade) final in the pleasant surroundings of Magdelen school, Oxford. A tough first round for the higher boards saw three points dropped in the top 5, but the middle and lower half of the team pulled this up to secure a lead of 2 points over the Middlesex Girls team (with only 3 girls?!).

The second round was a superb all round performance in scoring 9 out of 12 with only two losses. This proved to be far too good for the Middlesex team who fell a further 2½ points behind.

Congratulations to all the players, and also Martin May in probably his last appearance as under 14 manager. He managed to keep his 100% success record intact, and his enthusiasm (and the Mars bars) will be sorely missed next season.

The return match against Hampshire was another resounding success for  Martin May with a convincing 19½ - 4½ win. With a few key players missing for this away match, Sussex were not expecting such a thumping success, and this was borne out in the first round (9 - 3). However, the players warmed to playing with white, and in the second round returned a near perfect 10½ - 1½ score.  Well done to all, and good luck in the finals.

The string of successes under Martin May's leadership continued with a comfortable 14½ - 9½ win against Surrey in this return match. After such a close result in the first encounter, Sussex managed to strengthen the team with the inclusion of the girls who were previously not available. Both Stephanie on board 1 and Ellie on board 7 scored perfectly. Others scoring 2 out of 2 were Andrew Tucker, Richard Howell-Peak and Stephen Stracey, well done to them all.

Following the under 8 championship, the Under 14 (under 90 grade) team put up an fantastic display in disposing of Hampshire in the Southern Counties Chess Union competition by the largest margin ever for a Sussex Team. In the first round, not a single game was lost, and the three draws resulted in a 10½ - 1½ win to Sussex. The second round was nearly as successful, with one loss and two draws, giving a total of 10 - 2. The overall result of Sussex 20½ - Hampshire 3½ puts Sussex in a very strong position to qualify for the final and retain their trophy.

Commiserations to Hampshire who were clearly troubled by their late arrival, and were not prepared for the very experienced Sussex Team. I'm sure they will post markedly better results as their young team matures.
