SCCU U18 Jamboree - 10 February 2002
The Sussex under 18 team approached this tournament more with the objective of gaining experience for future years rather than with the expectation of picking up a prize. However, chess can be a funny game at times, and the youngsters (mostly under 16) triumphed by gaining third place ahead of the older and stronger teams
Having all arrived (just in time) at St Pauls School in Hammersmith the team entered the first round giving away an average 26 grading points each. To finish the round with 5 out of 12 was therefore an excellent acheivement. The stars were Charlie on board 1 with a draw against James Foster (166), Michael on board 3 with an unexpected but well played win against Edward Leung (130). Not two minutes earlier, the team manager had demonstrated his knowledge of chess by predicting a probable loss ! An incredible half point was collected by Eleanor on board 9 against an opponent with a grade almost double her own. With super wins from Joe Fraser and Nik Sinha playing his first representative match for Sussex, the final total was well above the most optimistic predictions at the start.
The second round started well with quick wins from Nik, Grant and Joe. However, Eleanor could not repeat her heroics of the first round and unfortunately lost to a lesser graded player. A good win from Adam was followed by a fantastic result from top board Charlie in beating Tim Woodward from Middlesex, at 184 over 50 grading points higher.
Another win from Michael against a strong opponent , and a well earned draw from Elliot Callow saw the round total up to 6½. This was just sufficient to take Sussex above the other third place contenders.
Many congratulations to all the team for a super performance. As most of this team will still be under 18 in 4 years time, the prospects for the future look extremely promising !
