Hastings Junior Congress - 5 January 2002A record 96 players turned up for this event. Unfortunately the three players from Nigeria failed to arrive, the furthest anyone had travelled was from Scotland. The event marked the start of sponsorship of Sussex Junior Chess by the Deutsch Electronics Company of Hastings, whilst the special guest was Ukrainian International Footballer, Andrei Kanchelskis, presently at Glasgow Rangers, but who is resident in Sussex. Andrei is a keen chess player, and was very interested in the organisation’s activities. He presented the prizes and signed many autographs. The headlining Under 18 Major section showed quality rather than quantity, with 7 of Sussex’s strongest players lining up. Charlie Linford (defending Champion) won with 6/6 (and no bye). All the other players had to have a bye. In second was Daniel Khoo, (4) gaining his highest Under 18 placing in his first year as an over 11. In equal third were Joe Fraser and Adam Prescott both on 3 ½. The Under 18 Minor saw a record 34 players. Three players finished with 5/6, but the winner on sum of progressive scores was Danny Eichner. This was Danny’s best ever Sussex score and will earn him a place in the Major competition at Eastbourne. The second place went to Elliott Callow, and third to Sam Siebert, expertly flying the flag for Kent. In fourth place came Jonathan Paley, who claimed the special Under 16 award. Twenty players were in the Under 11 Major. The class of the field were Andrew Tucker and Eleanor Hayden. They have not taken part in many Grand Prix events this year as they have been off chasing England places, but they proved in excellent form. Meeting in round 4 they had a genuine draw, despite being team-mates at Crowborough Chess Club. They then won their final two matches to share the spoils. In the next place came Mark Carter. He started the season in the Minor Tournament and has shown great determination in moving to the Major. Next came Nicholas Thorne. Mark and Nicholas both play at East Grinstead Chess Club. In the Under 11 Minor the winner, Sheila Dines (under 9) was marvelous in her play scoring 5 ½. Sheila was a visitor from Surrey. In second place was Thomas Seccombe, scoring his best ever Grand Prix result, with 5 points. Third was the youngest player in the tournament Peter Williams, still only aged 5, also scoring 5 points. All in all an excellent event thoroughly enjoyed by players, parents and organisers alike.
