Downs Open Tournament - 17 May 2002A record 110 competitors turned out for the final round of the Deutsch Limited Sussex Grand Prix, at the Vale First and Middle School in Findon Valley, Worthing. A slightly drizzly start to the day, gave way to the usual Worthing sunshine, which was a blessing because many players and parents could enjoy the lovely surroundings of the school, and not be forced in to overcrowded classrooms. The Under 18 Major attracted a top class field. This resulted in quite a number of draws, leaving the players in 1st to 3rd place all unbeaten on 4½ points. Nimai McCarthy (Bexhill-on-Sea) won on progressive scores, taking his second straight Sussex tournament win. Next came Joe Fraser from East Grinstead and then Adam Prescott of Uckfield. The Under 18 Minor was equally as tight, with James May (Crawley) taking his first ever Tournament win with an unbeaten 5/6. Second was Katherine Rattle, and third Neil Carter both from Uckfield and both with 4 ½. All three should find their way in to the Major events next season. The Under 11 Major saw its highest number of competitors this season, with 28 players, several from outside the County. Ellie Hayden (Uckfield) overcame top seed, Andrew Tucker in round 5, to take the title, with a brilliant 6/6. Andrew was still a point clear of the rest in second place. Third fell to Anuk Sirisena from Carshalton in Surrey, on 4. Also on 4 was Peter Williams from Alton (Hants.) who won the Under 7 prize – fantastic when he is an under 6. 51 players took part in the Under 11 Minor. Going in to the final round the only 2 players on 5 points were school friends Oskar Schortz (Hartfield) and Fraser Hyland (East Grinstead), both under 8. There was some speculation that they would agree a quick draw and share the honours, but in true sporting spirit they fought out a very good match, from which Oskar emerged the victor. Fraser retained second spot on progressive scores, with Rhys Cumming (Hove), also an under 8 in third. Also scoring 5 were Toby Cooper (Cobham) and Peter Jenion (Eastbourne). Simon Tucker and Jed Kaftez won age prizes. The prizes were presented by Chris Dwyer of Deutsch Limited.
