Chichester Open - 29 Sept 2001

This is the first SJC tournament that all players entered on the Friday evening turned-up, and no late entries on the day. Alot easier for the organisers! As usual the venue proved difficult to find, with two of the top Under 18 players arriving very late in the first round, providing some late excitement.

As it wa,s the score to have was 5 points. In the headlining under 18's Michael Hamilton won on progressives from Charlie Linford (Michael had beaten Charlie in round 3), both with 5. Adam Prescott, hero of the Crowborough Tournament weighed in with another useful performance of 4½.

In the Under 12's all three prize winners scored 5. Daniel Khoo managing to defend the title he won last year, from Yari Voropayev (London) and Charles Evans (Amersham, Bucks).

In the Under 10's (the largest age group), again all three prizes were scooped with 5 points. This time Farris Ziyada took his first title since November 2000, ahead of the improving David Grant, and Christopher Linnett. All three are Under 9 and should make the Sussex Under 9 Championships in November an event to remember.

The day's highest scorer was Ben Blundell in the Under 8's with 5½. He started very shakily with a stalemate, but quickly recovered, to edge out Jed Kafetz (5), and Jonathan Wood (4½). All three go into this week's Sussex Under 8 Championship as the players to beat.

(Thank you to Simon Deere for this report.)
