Summer Holiday Boredom Buster

Solution for Puzzle 2 posted July 26th 2009:

(c) Kc6-d6

If Black goes to c8, White has Ke7.
If Black goes to e8, White has Kc7.

In both cases, White sets up the winning position in puzzle 1 above.

Kc6-d6 is the only move which wins ! The other 2 moves only draw:

1. d5-d6 Kd8-c8; 2. d6-d7 Kc8-d8; 3. Kc6-d6 stalemate!

or

1. Kc6-c5 Kd8-c7; 2. d5-d6 Kc7-d7; 3. Kc5-d5 Kd7-d8 (the other 2 King moves lose – see if you can work out why); 4. Kd5-c6 Kd8-c8; 5. d6-d7 Kc8-d8; 6. Kc6-d6 stalemate !
