
Sir Patrick Moore is an amateur astronomer, famous for presenting one of the longest running TV series "The Sky at Night". In 2001, he was knighted for "services to the popularisation of science and to broadcasting" and appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society.
Although born in Surrey, he grew up in East Grinstead and has lived for much of his life in Selsey.
Amongst other interests and talents he is a keen chess player, allegedly competing for Sussex in the 1950s. He kindly accepted the title of Vice President of Sussex Junior Chess.
Sir Patrick presented this trophy to Sussex Junior Chess and it is awarded to the winner of the bienniel Sussex vs. Ireland friendly tournament.
