SJC for Individuals

We cater for all ages from 5 - 18, and all standards of play from beginner to National player.

Maybe you would like to aim for selection to one of the Sussex Teams, or even the England Squad.

SJC for Schools

We run one of the largest competitions for Schools in the UK, with an average of 40 Sussex Schools entering teams at U11, U14 and U18 age groups. Read more.

We have also set up an 'Academy Schools' program to encourage wider participation in schools. Read more.

If your school doesn't have a chess club, we may be able to help you find a coach in your area. Contact us.

Join Us

SJC Membership is optional, but at only £9 per family entitles you to discounted event entry and priority mailing of events. Download an application form.

We are entirely staffed by volunteers and we are always very grateful for support from parents. Help can be as little as taking a turn helping with the catering, to taking responsibility for coordinating events, or offering assistance in your area of expertise.

By remaining an entirely voluntary organisation, we are able to keep down the costs of events and hence encourage as many children as possible to attend.

Bursary Fund

The SJC Bursary fund has been established to assist families in need with expenses.  We welcome enquiries which will be dealt with in strict confidence.
Please email us for details.

Sussex Junior Chess

Est. 1995 - President: GM David Howell

Sussex Junior Chess is a not for profit organisation which exists to promote and popularise chess amongst school age children in the county.

We offer training days at venues around the county, and organise tournaments for individuals and schools.

We also select and run county teams (Under 9, Under 11, Under 11 Girls, Under 14, Under 18) who compete in national and international events.

All surpluses from SJC events are used to develop junior chess in Sussex.

Who's Who at SJC?

Our committee are usually present at most events and would welcome your questions and feedback.
